For the entire run of the series, all John has done is abuse and manipulate Jamie. John told Kayce that if Jamie was up for the task, he would meet with Jamie privately-meaning they would reconcile whatever differences they had. Kayce, too, thought Jamie should be entrusted with helping the Dutton family. After the attack on himself, Beth, and Kayce, John requested Jamie interview the prime suspect, a prisoner named Riggins. It seemed like John wanted to resolved things with Jamie early into Yellowstone’s fourth season.
